Quality of Life: Arts and Culture
The arts are the heartbeat of Douglasville. The foundation of the artistic community is the non-profit Cultural Arts Center (CAC) which serves more than 45,000 people annually. CAC offers a superb and diverse array of programs and performances throughout the year including museum-quality monthly exhibits at the Cultural Arts Center and special shows at the Chamber of Commerce and WellStar Douglas Hospital, free concerts at O’Neal Plaza, a series of classical chamber concerts, art education in schools, hands-on workshops and classes, gallery talks, book signings and readings, and even an annual Cowboy Poets Gathering and Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
The CAC also supports several satellite local arts organizations including the Douglas County Chamber Singers, the CAC Curators Club, C.A.S.T. (Community Alliance of Stage and Theater), the Douglas County Art Guild, Douglas County Connection, Douglas County Cowboy Poets, Douglas County Cultural Exchange, Douglas County Historical Society, Douglas County Poetry Writers, Douglas County Writers Group, Friends for the Arts and Music Education (F.A.M.E.), and the Sweetwater Camera Club. This level of support resulted in CAC being ranked by the Georgia Council of the Arts panel as the top local arts agency in the state with annual budget of less than $1 million.
In Douglasville, the arts are celebrated both within and beyond, as the community benefits from its close proximity to Atlanta with seeming endless opportunities for cultural enjoyment. From Broadway shows, symphonies, opera and ballet to popular music performances and artists gallery shows, you will discover a world of possibilities all within 30 minutes of Douglasville.
